Topic: Case Studies on High Pressure Milling in the Duvernay
Several challenges must be overcome to successfully perform plug milling operations in the Duvernay formation of Alberta, Canada. Extremely high average circulating pressures (55 MPa/8,000 psi) are encountered as a result of formation pressures and the length of coiled tubing (CT) required (7,500 m/24,600 ft). This presentation discusses the CT design considerations required, the challenges encountered during the operation, and the lessons learned to date. A Duvernay oil and gas producer requested that the CT service company evaluate the feasibility of milling out plugs post-fracturing on several horizontal well depths greater than 7000m (23,260ft). The CT service company possessed the reel and injector capability however the feasibility of the CT plug milling operation depended heavily on the CT design. Achieving target depth with sufficient set-down force while managing circulating pressures and CT fatigue were the critical factors. The operation required 130,000 psi minimum yield strength CT, a relatively new and untested CT material, to overcome the high circulating pressures. An aggressive tapered wall thickness was required to address friction and provide sufficient set-down force near the toe of the horizontal wellbores. Coiled tubing transport, injector capabilities, and fatigue management had to be considered throughout the operation to achieve success. The series of case studies is important because CT of this grade, length, and design had not previously been run in the Duvernay shale formation. Using an experimental string design with a strong focus on operational practices, several key learnings were achieved to guide and improve future operations. Although the milling campaign has been a success to date, further knowledge on CT fatigue and diameter growth limitations must be pursued to improve the efficiency and safety of future operations.
