The Effects of Extended Reach Tools on Plug Millout Operations

Abstract:
Well completions in the United States are predominantly completed using the plug and perforate process. Following the fracture stimulation treatment, coiled tubing (CT) is utilized to convey a downhole milling assembly to remove these plugs and clean out the wellbore. As wells continue to extend in lateral length, the use of an extended reach tool (ERT) is commonly used to aid in achieving these depths.
In order to truly understand the milling process using an ERT, a downhole memory tool was developed. The memory tool is run in-line with the milling assembly and obtains weight on bit (WoB), torque, pressure, temperature, and vibration at one second sampling rates. The tool has been run on multiple bottom hole assemblies on both 2 3/8” and 2 5/8” coiled tubing on over 35 jobs accounting for 1500 frac plugs.
The data collected has been compared to surface data providing a detailed view of the overall plug milling operation. Each frac plug manufacturer has a unique torque “signature”, easily identifiable through the analysis. Additionally, the extended reach tools used in the operations provide weight-on-bit while milling at a level that is un-predictable by commercial coiled tubing modeling software. Comparison of the surface weight gauge with the downhole WoB enable a clearer understanding of the forces provided by the ERT. This data provides an avenue for detailed plug comparisons, better job planning and informed decision on ERT selection.

Jason Skufca has over 24 years of experience in coiled tubing well intervention having worked for BJ Services/Baker Hughes, ConocoPhillips and now Nine Energy Service. His expertise in coiled tubing spans conventional and unconventional completions, deepwater, and drilling. His global work experience includes projects in North and South America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. Jason is well respected in the coiled tubing community, having served as Senior Chairman of the international board of directors for the Intervention and Coiled Tubing Association, ICoTA. Additionally, Jason serves on the SPE committee for the national ICoTA conference held annually in Houston, Texas. He holds a BS degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University.
